SUMMARY:Boyette Slave and Schoolhouse / Johnson County Heritage Center
DESCRIPTION:The Boyette Slave and Schoolhouse was built in the 1830s on the Boyette Family Farm in Northern Johnston County which dates back to colonial North Carolina circa 1797. This 12 x 16 one-room log dwelling was built for the Boyette’s slaves and was made from pine timber from the farm with full-dovetailed notches and dowels. The unique chimney is made entirely of heart-of-pine sticks and daubed with clay base mortar and is the only structures of its kind still standing in NC. \nIn 1890-1910 the building was used as a neighborhood school. In 1979\, the building was restored by the Boyette Family and was placed on the national Register of Historical Places. The Boyette Slave House is a rare example of a type of structure and construction method which originated in medieval building traditions and since the end of slavery has nearly disappeared from the architectural history of NC. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWhich events would you like to participate in?(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nHow did you hear of the Slave Dwelling Project?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWould you like to receive the SDP newsletter?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ

SUMMARY:Relmagine Lefferts\, Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Book signing and sleepover at Relmagine Lefferts\, Prospect Park\, Brooklyn\, NY \nProspect Park Alliance has launched ReImagine Lefferts\, an initiative to re-envision the mission and programming of the Lefferts Historic House museum to recognize its role as a site of slavery\, and tell the stories—in innovative\, inclusive and forward-thinking ways—of the enslaved Africans who lived and worked on the Lefferts farm\, and the Indigenous people of the Lenapehoking whose unceded ancestral lands the farm rested upon. \nThe Alliance seeks to engage the public in a thoughtful dialogue about the legacy of slavery and the exploitation of marginalized communities\, as well as conduct scholarly research into the people who lived and worked the land. The goal is to create programs and exhibits that bring together people of all ages and backgrounds around challenging issues of history and identity. \nBy centering the narratives at the museum on those that are underrepresented in the telling of American history\, we hope that the visitor experience will become even more reflective of the Brooklyn community\, providing a safe space for dialogue about our collective past and contemporary times. With ReImagine Lefferts\, the Alliance seeks to address the legacy of slavery and oppression in New York\, while also highlighting stories of triumph\, resilience\, and joy within underrepresented communities. \nTo accomplish this work\, the Alliance is engaging historians\, scholars and universities to provide robust research and new source material for educational programming; collaborating with museum professionals\, cultural organizations and artists to create content that will support the museum’s new focus; and deepening our relationship with the communities near Lefferts through active conversation and outreach. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWhich events would you like to Participate in?(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nHow did you hear of the Slave Dwelling Project?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n \nWould you like to receive the SDP Newsletter?\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ \n \n

SUMMARY:Juneteenth\, Mitchellville\, Hilton Head Island\, SC
DESCRIPTION:Please join Joseph McGill on Juneteenth at historic Mitchelville for a book signing and sleepover. \nWhat had begun as only a military mission grew into something more than that. Mitchelville became a vibrant\, self-governed community\, both defined and accentuated by the customs and cultures of native islanders\, the Gullahs\, and those brought to America from a multitude of countries and islands. At its height\, Mitchelville boasted 1\,500 to 3\,000 residents and demonstrated freedom and opportunity for African Americans diverse in backgrounds and origins. \n\n← Back Thank you for your response. ✨\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n\n\nName(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nEmail(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWhich Events would you like to participate in?(required)\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nHow did you hear of the Slave Dwelling Project?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\nWould you like to receive the SDP Newsletter?\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n \n \n \n Submit \n \n \n \nΔ \n \n</slavedwellingproject@gmail.com></jmcgill769@gmail.com></corie@coriehipp.com>

James Montgomery directed three steamships up the Combahee under the protection of Black soldiers of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. With Confederate troops retreating from the area\, enslaved people ran from the surrounding plantations toward the US ships as they sounded their steam whistles – notes that personified the sound of freedom. Thanks to the intelligence collected by Tubman\, more than 750 men\, women\, and children were liberated in a single night during the Combahee River Raid. \nBetween June 1-4\, 2023\, Join a wide variety of community organizations and historians\, including Reconstruction Era National Historical Park\, The Slave Dwelling Project\, the Black Moses Freedom Festival\, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor\, and historian Dr. Edda L. Fields-Black for a series of events and programs commemorating the 160th Anniversary of this event.
