Tents will be provided by Historic Mitchelville Park.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Raid on Combahee Ferry\n\n\n\n\nOn the evening of June 1\, 1863 Harriet Tubman and Col. James Montgomery directed three steamships up the Combahee under the protection of Black soldiers of the 2nd South Carolina Infantry. With Confederate troops retreating from the area\, enslaved people ran from the surrounding plantations toward the US ships as they sounded their steam whistles – notes that personified the sound of freedom. Thanks to the intelligence collected by Tubman\, more than 750 men\, women\, and children were liberated in a single night during the Combahee River Raid. \nBetween June 1-4\, 2023\, Join a wide variety of community organizations and historians\, including Reconstruction Era National Historical Park\, The Slave Dwelling Project\, the Black Moses Freedom Festival\, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor\, and historian Dr. Edda L. This March\, Hobcaw Barony embraces its journey and celebrates the lives that shaped this historic area of our nation in a 2-part presentation by Joseph McGill\, founder and executive director of The Slave Dwelling Project. \nOn Friday McGill will speak and facilitate a conversation on “changing the narrative” with visitors at the Hobcaw Barony Discovery Center from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. The Slave Dwelling Project uses buildings that the enslaved lived and worked in to educate and raise awareness about true American history. No sugarcoating\, just being transparent\, and helping all to learn more of the common history of Americans. McGill\, a history consultant for Magnolia Plantation in Charleston\, South Carolina\, has served as executive director of the African American Museum in Cedar Rapids\, Iowa\, and as director of history and culture at Penn Center\, St. Helena Island\, South Carolina. \nThe conversation moves to Friendfield Village on Saturday\, for ‘Inalienable Rights: Living History through the Eyes of the Enslaved.’ In the Village participants will have an opportunity to explore cabins of the enslaved and learn more about the people that lived in various slave villages that are now part of Hobcaw Barony. This program runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\, is interactive and all-day presence is not required. \nSince 2016\, the Slave Dwelling Project has conducted numerous living history programs at historic sites throughout the United States. These programs include Black historians in period dress demonstrating and interpreting the agency\, skills\, and history of formerly enslaved people. These family friendly programs include the demonstration of cooking\, blacksmithing\, and brickmaking.
