Toni Carrier is a genealogist on the move! She conducts research on a plethora of notable projects showcasing the history of the African American journey in America. She has conducted research for the PBS series ‘African American Lives 2’ and completed research on behalf of the Smithsonian Institute’s new National Museum of African American History and Culture. Additionally, on behalf of ‘Obama For America’, Carrier conducted research on First Lady Michelle Obama’s family tree.

She is the founding Director of Lowcountry Africana (www.lowcountryfricana.com) which showcases a website dedicated to African American genealogy and history in the low country areas of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The organization, sponsored by the Magnolia Plantation Foundation of Charleston, SC works with descendants of slaveholders and descendants of slaves to document the history and genealogy of enslaved communities. Ms Carrier is also the founder of the USF Africana Heritage Project (www.africanaheritage.com). She holds a Master’s degree in Applied Anthropology from the University of South Florida and has been researching in low country records for the past 13 years.

       “People and Spaces: Using Genealogical Research to Rediscover and Preserve the Stories of the Enslaved” and “Timber by Timber: Relocating the Point of Pines Slave Cabin to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture”.
